This past weekend was the Relay For Life in Second Life, where residents of the virtual world celebrated their fundraising efforts to help support cancer
research. Basically, it's collecting the in world currency and converting it to real cash (yes, you can do that, only you have to be making a buttload of
L$ in order to make a living at it). Just like Relay For Life in the real world, you have teams and campsites and there's the walk, and a luminaria
ceremony. In Second Life....there's lag due to so many people being online and on the special plots of land that are provided, occasional crashes, servers
going down so some of the land disappears for a bit....but, there's also some amazing builds from the residents, testimonies from residents on why they
relay, and a feeling of accomplishment when the 24 hour relay is complete.
This is the second year I've done this, in memory of my friend and supervisor, David (who lost his fight with cancer last year). Yea, I know, occasionally I go on and on about Second Life.....but when close to 2000 SL residents come together and raise over a quarter of a million US dollars (yes, the real money, not the in world cash), seems something like that could teach the real world a lesson or two.
