Perhaps the greatest sports commentator ever - and the only reason I say 'perhaps' is because of Murray Walker. But football and athletics? How is that possible? David managed it, but aside from his iconic commentaries on Sally Gunnell and Linford Christie's Olympic gold-winning performances, I'll remember him for A Question Of Sport - and just one or two hilarious gaffes:
“It’s gold or nothing ... and it’s nothing. He comes away with the silver medal.”
“There is Brendan Foster, by himself with 20,000 people.”
“Forest have now lost six matches without winning.”
“The front wheel crosses the finish line, closely followed by the back wheel.”
“If that had gone in, it would have been a goal.”
“This evening is a very different evening from the morning we had this morning.”
"And the line-up for the final of the women's 400 metres hurdles includes three Russians, two East Germans, a Pole, a Swede and a Frenchman."
I love that last one - I can't help imagining a French guy on the start line with balloons stuffed down his vest!
RIP David, and if you get a mo in the afterlife feel free to look down and have a commentary on one of my hockey games - you and Ron Pickering will be guaranteed to have a laugh!
