New Screengrab God is youngest ever!
Matt Smith has been named as the deity who will take over from The Screengrab Flibble on Glitter's Cap-Page Board - making him the youngest God to take on the role. At 26, Smith is three years younger than The Screengrab Spongemonkey when he signed up to play the fifth Screengrab God in 2007. Smith will first appear on internet screens as the seventh Screengrab God in 2010. He was cast over Thanksgiving and will begin providing screengrabs for the eighth of the Cap-Page Board in the winter. The Screengrab Flibble is providing screengrabs for the remainder of 2009. Smith was named as Flibble's replacement in Sunday's edition of the Announcements forum on Yuku. The website was visited by an audience of 6.9 million people at its peak, according to official overnight figures. The actor said: "I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the website so thrilling. "The Flibble has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. "The challenge for me is to do justice to the Board's illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who visit it. I really cannot wait." GlitterRock, webmaster at the Cap-Page Board, said that as soon as he had seen Smith's audition he "knew he was the one.
"It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Screengrab God-ness' about him," he said. "You are either the Screengrab God or you are not. It's just the beginning of the journey for Matt. "With all of the programming of the CPB and the expertise of the cappers behind him, there is no one more perfect to be taking the CPB to exciting new futures when the website enters 2010." GlitterRock said a broad range of people had been auditioned, but they had not set out to cast the youngest Screengrab God. Smith's TV debut was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred Capper Crush companion Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart. He has also acted opposite Piper in the follow-up, The Shadow in the North, and in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl. In 2007, he had a leading role in BBC Two's political drama Party Animals, in which he played a parliamentary researcher. Smith's stage work has included stints with theatre companies such as the Royal Court and National Theatre. His West End debut was in Swimming With Sharks opposite Christian Slater. He was born in Northampton in 1982 and studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia. The Screengrab Flibble said in June that he would stand down from the website after providing screengrabs for the rest of the year. The Screengrab God is due to return to provide new screen captures for the Cap-Page Board starting on December 5, just weeks after surgery on his back forced him to pull out of a London run of Hamlet. The last of the programs he will be providing was to be the traditional Best Year Ever special which was expected to run in on New Year's Eve 2009. However with that program's current hiatus, the final program he will be posting on December 31 is currently under negotiations. Glitter's Cap-Page Board began in 2002, and four Screengrab Gods provided the images before the website was transferred to Yuku in 2008.
